A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

A farcical plot to woo a beautiful lady descends upon ancient Rome throughout the musical comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. With his freedom at stake, a crafty slave invests all his time and energy in securing his shy master’s romantic ambitions. However, along the way, this hapless wingman tumbles into a cluster of zany characters and situations that spiral into a vortex of mistaken identities, wild chases, and side-splitting humor. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, one of composer Stephen Sondheim’s earliest works, pays tribute to the most absurd of vaudevillian shows and netted a mantel’s worth of Tony Awards during its original Broadway run.

During this production, Eddie Mekka stars as the slave Pseudolus. Fans know Mekka as Carmine “The Big Ragoo” Ragusa on Laverne & Shirley in the ’70s and ’80s. But when that TV classic ended, his career was only beginning. Since then he’s been seen on 24 and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as taking a Tony-nominated turn on Broadway’s The Lieutenant. During Forum, Mekka’s performance prompted Naples News to say, “Mekka doesn’t just carry this show—he propels it forward as if powered by a jet engine shooting flames of merriment into the audience”
